Day 3: Oops, that hit hard!

Note to self: two mudslides at breakfast is NOT a good idea.

For those just joining, a bit of background:

This is my first cruise after undergoing bariatric (gastric sleeve) surgery in July. I’m still re-learning to eat in ways that are compatible with my new digestive reality. (As an example, as I write this I’ve just finished a BBQ bacon cheeseburger, no bun, and fries…and I am overly full.)

Alcohol and sweets are things I’m having trouble managing. Both will cause what is know as “dumping syndrome,” which I won’t explain here. But the much smaller stomach also means less ability to process the alcohol before it hits my liver…so less alcohol has more effect, and more quickly.

Breakfast at O’Sheehan’s

Ham & Cheese Omelette, a couple of pieces of sausage, and part of an order of French toast. Should be a decent start to the day, high-protein, not too much quantity, right? Turns out bracketing it with a mudslide before and one after was not a wise choice. That went straight to my head.

Cue the stumble-step half the length of the ship to the room, arriving at the room for a round of … you guess … and a 60-90 minute nap. I still didn’t get the license plate of the dump truck that hit me…but I did add a lesson to the “you can’t do this, dude!” file.

Sea Day #2

We woke to a nice day, small whitecaps but nothing major.

By mid-day I was back in form, and proceeded to Spinnaker to catch up on my writing and reviewing. Trivia and dance lessons were the flavor of the hours while I wrote yesterday’s posts. Specifically, an ink blot test disguised as the outline of 20 countries from around the world, and what looked like a ?mambo? 5,6,7,8…

I got Rick-rolled twice on the music loop while I was writing the Cruise Critic near-live posts about days 1 and 2.

Dinner at La Cuchina

Preview: best dinner so far this sailing! See the full review here.

Comedy Show

I don’t remember the comedian’s name, but that’s an issue I have, not his lack of being memorable. He is an older guy, fairly spontaneous and responsive to the crowd, and I thought it was an enjoyable 45 minutes. Much better than either of the people who were on Escape two years ago.

4.5 out of 5.0 stars

We plan to see his “adult” show on Friday.

End of the Day: Spinnaker Lounge Games & Music

A hilarious episode of the Newlywed and Not-So-Newlywed game made for a fun bridge between comedy and the Abba tribute done by the ship’s tribute band.

Honestly, she was a better Karen Carpenter sound-alike Sunday night than Abba sound-alike Monday night!

First Shore Day tomorrow: Puerto Vallarta
