Review: Cagney’s, NCL Jade 2025

One of our two must-do traditions on Day 1 of any NCL Cruise: The first mudslide and dining at Cagney’s. They have become immutable parts of our experience.

The shrimp appetizer came out as expected. I thought it had been reduced by one shrimp from what I remembered on Escape two years ago, but I went back in my photo reel and both are three-shrimp presentations on a crisp slaw with cocktail sauce.

And the evaluation? “Meets Expectations”
Roxan’s appetizer: Thick-cut bacon

The thick-cut bacon was a surprise. I think it’s because of it being different from what we are used to — no added maple flavor or other flavoring. This was just grilled thick cut pork, nothing more or less. Reasonably tasty, yet a bit short of expectation. I think this one is on us, though, not NCL…we didn’t know what to expect.

Entrees

My prime rib. I’m spoiled with Texas Roadhouse, which has a lot of added flavor. Taking that into account, the prime at Cagney’s is high-quality. Yet the quality of the meat cut itself was not as good as I remember.
Roxan’s petite fillet. This was pretty good. I’ll have a hard time choosing between the fillet and the ribeye when we eat at Cagney’s again Friday.

Dessert

Roxan’s butterscotch cheesecake
My dessert was an apple pie tart with a side of “mode.” Tasty.

Overall Rating

4.8 out of 5.0 stars

There is a reason Cagney’s is a first-night tradition: consistency. It’s a lot of the reason Texas Roadhouse is our favorite restaurant…we know what we’re going to get. And in those terms, Cagney’s delivers. That consistency from sailing to sailing is also one of the ways I use to gauge any overall quality drift in the NCL offerings. Just like the ribeye is the best way to judge the quality of a steakhouse, Cagney’s sets our palate expectations for each sailing.
